NEC Electronics Earns World's First Certification for USB 3.0

Touch USB 3.0 and experience Super Speed! NEC Electronics earns world’s first certification for USB 3.0

SuperSpeed

On September 21, 2009, NEC Electronics became the world’s first to earn the "Certified SuperSpeed USB (USB 3.0)" certification for the USB 3.0 specification. The product officially certified by USB-IF (USB Implementers Forum: the organization responsible for formulating USB specifications) is our USB 3.0 host controller, "μPD720200." A USB 3.0 IP core compatible with the host controller has also been launched. Starting with these new products, NEC Electronics will make active contributions to aid the establishment of the USB 3.0 market.

USB Certification

USB-IF offers the Compliance and Certification Program as an opportunity for developers to evaluate compliance of their products with the USB specifications. Products that pass the certification program are listed on the USB-IF website, and are permitted to use the official USB-IF logos. Customers (e.g. set manufacturers) can simplify the certification process for their final products by making use of certified semiconductor products.

USB 3.0

USB (Universal Serial Bus) is an interface specification that was designed to allow various peripheral devices to be connected via standardized connectors. USB 3.0, the next-generation USB specification was released in 2008, boosting the maximum transfer rate to 5 Gbps.
USB 3.0 will offer a myriad of possibilities for applications requiring fast and high-capacity communication, while maintaining compatibility with USB 2.0.

Higher Transfer Rate/Backward Compatibility/Power Supplying Capability

USB 3.0 Transfer Rate

The data transfer rate for USB 3.0 is approximately 10 times faster than that of USB 2.0. We have prepared a demonstration to illustrate this boost in performance. The demonstration uses our USB 3.0 host controller μPD720200 to simultaneously transfer 500MB of data to a USB 2.0 device and a USB 3.0 device. While transfer to the USB 2.0 device takes about 40 seconds, transfer to the USB 3.0 device only takes about 4 seconds. View the following movie to experience the amazing speed offered by USB 3.0.

An Add-in Card reference board equipped with μD720200 was installed into a PC. One of the two USB ports on µD720200 was used to transfer data in USB 2.0, while the other was used to transfer data in USB 3.0. The progress of each was displayed on the screen. While data transfer over USB 2.0 takes some time to complete, it only takes a few seconds over USB 3.0. USB 3.0 has also achieved system performance in excess of 200 MB/s.

Exhibits at IDF 2009

Intel Developers Forum 2009, a conference for developers of Intel-related products such as USB, was held in San Francisco from September 22 to 24, 2009. NEC Electronics demonstrated data transfer using its µPD720200 USB 3.0, showcasing its leadership in the field. The conference included the announcement by USB-IF regarding the USB 3.0 certification of our LSI, as well as many other exhibits and press releases from various USB partners, indicating that USB 3.0 technology has steadily grown to the point where it is ready to tackle the market.
