Environmental Activities of NEC Electronics
In Europe today, usage restrictions on the chemical substances utilized in end products continue to be tightened by the WEEE (waste electrical and electronic equipment), RoHS (restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment) and ELV (end of life vehicles) directives.
In Japan as well, environmental laws such as the Law for Recycling of Specified Kinds of Home Appliances (Home Appliances Recycling Law) and the Law Concerning the Evaluation of Chemical Substances and Regulation of Their Manufacturer, etc. (Chemical Substances Control Law) have been enacted, and similar regulations are heading for legalization in China(China RoHS). Worldwide, countries are taking measures to protect the Earth's environment.
The movement towards tighter regulations and environmental protection has led manufacturers in the electronics and automotive fields to examine how they can eliminate hazardous chemical substances from their products.
The semiconductor business has a very heavy impact on the environment. It uses the most chemical substances of any electronics manufacturing operation and consumes the most energy. Nevertheless, the products of customers who use semiconductors contribute greatly to alleviating environmental impact due to the high functionality and power efficiency of those very semiconductors. We as a semiconductor manufacturer must play our part and help protect the environment by reducing the environmental impact of our manufacturing operations and producing power-efficient products that contain no restricted chemicals.
