NEC Electronics Joins the United Nations Global Compact

Human Rights, Labor, Environment and Corruption Issues Incorporated in CSR Policy

KAWASAKI, Japan, May 15, 2008

NEC Electronics Corporation today announced its participation in the United Nations Global Compact, the world's largest global corporate citizenship initiative. The company's participation marks its commitment to incorporating the ten principles outlined in the Global Compact in the areas of human rights, labor standards, environmental protection, and anti-corruption. NEC Electronics joins the ranks of more than 60 Japanese companies that have elected to participate in this initiative, and is the first Japanese semiconductor company to do so.

First proposed in 1999 by then United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan, and officially adopted in July 2000 at the UN headquarters in New York, over 5,000 companies and organizations worldwide have announced their agreement with the principles and participation since the Compact was established in July 2000. The Global Compact encourages companies to establish regulations and mechanisms to fight corruption, take human rights into consideration in the countries and regions where they conduct business, build an infrastructure to control product and service quality, and otherwise carry out business with corporate social responsibility (CSR).

NEC Electronics has recognized the importance of being a good corporate citizen since its establishment in 2002. In 2004, it established the NEC Electronics Group Guiding Principles and NEC Electronics Group Code of Conduct, as well as a CSR Promotion Committee. In 2005, the company began publishing a CSR report that details its wide range of CSR activities, including the development and promotion of environmentally friendly technologies.

With the rise of globalization in recent years, however, issues such as human rights violations, labor exploitation and forced child labor have become increasingly prominent, bringing a focus to labor and human rights within the scope of CSR activities. NEC Electronics views its participation in the Global Compact as an opportunity to review its involvement in CSR, while renewing its awareness of labor and human rights issues. The company will continue to implement education and training programs to ensure that every employee and executive thoroughly understands and incorporates the Global Compact principles in the course of their daily business activities.
