NEC Electronics Launches 78K0/Fx Series of Microcontrollers
New 8-Bit Microcontrollers Support a Variety of Automotive Body Applications

78K0/Fx Series
"78K0/Fx Series"

CONVERGENCE 2004, DETROIT, October 18, 2004 -
In its ongoing effort to deliver application-specific microcontrollers (MCUs) designed specifically for the automotive market, NEC Electronics Corporation (TSE: 6723) and its subsidiaries in Europe and the United States, NEC Electronics (Europe) GmbH and NEC Electronics America, Inc., today announced the 78K0/Fx series of MCUs for automotive body applications, including mirror control, door modules and sun roof control. The series was designed around an NEC Electronics 78K0 8-bit MCU core and features a peripheral set specifically targeted at body applications, including up to sixteen A/D converter channels, two 16-bit timers and four 8-bit timers. Products in the 78K0/Fx series are on display at Convergence 2004 through Wednesday this week in the NEC Electronics America booth (#1309).

The new series complements NEC Electronics' 32-bit V850ES/FxTM MCUs, which were designed for automotive body and heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) applications and announced at Convergence 2002. With these two series, NEC Electronics now offers MCUs with a broad range of performance and peripheral support to help customers scale their designs to meet the increasing demands of body and HVAC applications. Today's announcement marks the further evolution of NEC Electronics' successful automotive MCU strategy of combining application-specific product features and peripherals with scalable product architectures. This strategy began with the launch of the V850ES/SxTM series for automotive audio applications and continues with today's announcement of the 78K0/Fx series.

"Automotive body and HVAC systems are becoming increasingly complex. Support for features such as programmable seat and mirror settings and multi-zone climate control demands sophisticated electronic control systems," said Jim Trent, general manager of NEC Electronics America's automotive strategic business unit. "Accordingly, with the 8-bit 78K0/Fx and 32-bit V850ES/Fx series, NEC Electronics has developed two compatible MCU product lines that provide customers with scalable MCU performance to meet their application needs."

In addition to its A/D converter channel and timer support, the 78K0/Fx MCUs feature integrated power-on reset circuitry, a low-voltage indicator and a 240 kHz ring oscillator. The ring oscillator can serve as a clock source for the internal watchdog timer, eliminating the need for external logic and reducing design complexity and cost.

Hardware and software debugging for the entire 78K0/Fx series is supported by the IECUBE, a low-cost, high-performance, full-function in-circuit emulator that interfaces with the system programmer's computer via a USB 2.0 interface and is able to do full-system emulation and debugging. Additionally, the MINICube, a real-time emulator for the 78K0/Fx series, is also available.

Pricing and Availability
Samples of the 78K0/Fx series of MCUs in 44-, 64- and 80- pin QFP packages and with memory ranging from 32 to 60 kilobytes (KB) of flash and up to 3 KB of RAM are available now.
