NEC Electronics Introduces New Software Development Tool for V850 Series Microcontrollers

KAWASAKI, Japan, October 6, 2003 -
NEC Electronics Corporation announced today the introduction of software tools for the efficient software development for products such as car-audio and other digital products. Strengthening its V850 line of single-chip 32-bit RISC microcontrollers, NEC Electronics introduced the automated verification system XO850 (XO: eXaminer for system Operation), for application fault-testing and verification.

This tool allows automated testing of software and construction of test-suites for products such as car-audio using the real-time OS, on the same hardware as the final product, connected to a personal computer for testing. Using an RS232C cable to link a standard PC with the V850- series-using product, this tool is able to drastically reduce the time and effort required for software testing. For instance, testing time for a car-audio related product may be reduced by fifty percent. In addition, the new tool makes it possible to use a large volume of tests, which would be impractical using manual testing, and by checking test coverage and guarding against untested functionality, makes it simple to improve product quality.

The XO850 is using modeling of final products such as car-audio control panel or AV remote-control user-interfaces, thereby allowing data to be automatically entered into a model of application user-interface and test scenarios to be executed on the product hardware. Also by using the XO850, such actions as repetitive key entry can be simply turned into test scripts and automatically executed during software development, and the reaction of the application software are automatically compared against expected values.

"In recent years, the increased functionality and variety of products have caused the proportion of development time devoted to testing to greatly increase, and software changes due to altered product specifications or corrections during development have increased the regression testing required by high quality products," said Yoichi Yano, general manager, 4th System LSI Division, NEC Electronics Corporation. "This XO850 is therefore a perfect solution for customers who pursue high quality and abundant functions for their products while minimizing the software development cost."

In addition to shortening the software development time and allowing execution of a large volume of testing that was not possible by manual testing, the XO850 allows users to drastically cut development costs when software features are revised, as the original test environment can be re-used. Users can also automatically record all test data input, making any resulting failures easily reproducible. Moreover, the expensive hardware, which would cost five to seven million yen usually, used by conventional testing methods, is not necessary for the XO850. At the same time, by adding feature tests during each stage of development in association with an external V850-series debugger, users can achieve even higher quality test environment.

NEC Electronics will show this new product starting 7 October 2003 at the `CEATEC JAPAN' electronics and information technology exhibition, at the Makuhari Messe in Chiba City, Chiba Prefecture.

Pricing and Availability
The XO850 is now available at the price of 200,000 yen for the standard configuration. Mass production is planned to begin at the end October, and NEC Electronics expects to sell approximately 100 copies in the next three years.
