KAWASAKI, Japan, September 18, 2003 -
NEC Electronics Corporation today announced that it has began a sample shipment of µPD160015, developed as the world's first 10-bit TFT LCD source driver IC adopting mini-LVDS (low voltage differential signaling).

The single use of µPD160015 will enable the number of colors displayed to reach 1 billion, marking a dramatic improvement from the maximum 16.8 million colors achieved by 6- or 8-bit drivers conventionally used for large-scale LCD televisions and LCD monitors. Compared to the lower-bit drivers, which were insufficient to provide high processing for high-quality colors, the new 10-bit driver IC easily realizes the subtle tone of colors and the representation of gradation without lowering the quality of picture caused by flickers and deterioration of resolution.

"Our target applications are products like large-size LCD televisions demanding high-quality motion picture processing and medical equipment monitors that require delicate tone of colors and gradation," said Kazumichi Aoki, general manager, 5th System LSI Division, NEC Electronics Corporation. "With the new driver IC, customers will no longer need to try the traditional methods of pseudo grayscale such as area gradation indication and frame rate control through external control circuit to increase the colors in displays."

In the µPD160015, a new digital to analog converter (DAC) is adopted for 10-bit resolution. Through optimization of the DAC circuitry and reduction of the transistor count, NEC Electronics has succeeded in reducing the whole chip size by 40 percent compared to the design using the conventional method, while improving the performance.

The interface applied is mini-LVDS, which is highly scalable and suitable for a high- resolution driver IC like µPD160015. As an added benefit, mini-LVDS makes it possible to avoid the signal count increase despite the implementation of 10-bit resolution, contributing to compact designing of displays.

Pricing and Availability
NEC Electronics Corporation is scheduled to begin the mass production of the µPD160015 from March 2004, numbering 100,000 pieces per month. Engineering samples are available now at the price of $10 in US dollars. Pricing is subject to change.
