NEC Electronics has become Associated Member of the FlexRay® Consortium

DUESSELDORF, Germany, KAWASAKI, Japan, and SANTA CLARA, Calif., February 28, 2003 -
NEC Electronics today announced that it has become a new associated member in the FlexRay Consortium. The scope of the consortium is to jointly develop an innovative communications network for automotive applications that require high levels of communication bandwidth and deterministic fault tolerant data transmission. Typical FlexRay target areas are body electronics, powertrain applications and chassis control including x-by-wire systems.

NEC is a leading supplier of automotive semiconductor solutions and will bring in its dedicated networking know-how to the Consortium's specification activities. Based on its automotive-proven semiconductor technology, NEC's aim is to become one of the major suppliers of FlexRay products.

BMW, DaimlerChrysler, Motorola and Philips founded the FlexRay Consortium in 1999. Bosch and General Motors joined the consortium as Core Members in 2001. Meanwhile the list of consortium members and development partners includes more than 30 companies.

FlexRay offers high bandwidth (10 Mbits/s) and flexible configuration options. By complementing the existing in-vehicle networking standards CAN, LIN and MOST, it will enable design engineers at car makers and system suppliers to develop entirely new and innovative system concepts for future vehicles.

In x-by-wire systems - a typical FlexRay target application - mechanical or hydraulic fallback components, currently often complemented by electronics, will be completely replaced by electronic control systems. These systems must be extremely secure and reliable. They must be able to guarantee that steer and brake signal transmissions occur within a clearly defined time frame, therefore a deterministic bus system like FlexRay is mandatory.

FlexRay® is a registered trademark of DaimlerChrysler AG.
