Fujitsu Quantum Devices and Sumitomo Electric Industries Announce Enhancements and New Supporters for 10 Gbps Transmission Laser Diode Module Multi-Source Agreement

Tokyo, September 5, 2002

Fujitsu Quantum Devices, Ltd. (FQD) and Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. (SEI) announced the enhancements to their multi-source agreement (MSA) for a 10 Gbps transmission laser diode (LD) module.

The MSA, which was originally announced in March 2002, defines a standard for 1.55 micron wavelength distributed feedback laser diode monolithically integrated with electro absorption modulator mounted onto the industry's smallest-in-class metal ceramic package with a driver IC and transmits data at speeds of 10 Gbps in compliance with ITU-T G.691 and Telecodia GR-253-CORE. In response to growing requests from the customers, the MSA specifications were defined in further detail, and new product types, including direct modulation type, were added to increase the ease of use for the designers of system equipment and optical transceivers and transponders.

In addition, NEC Compound Semiconductor Devices, Ltd., NTT Electronics Corporation and Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd have joined the MSA. The growing number of supporters of the MSA ensures stable availability of compatible products to the customers.

This module will be displayed in the exhibition booths of SEI and NEC Compound Semiconductor Devices at Richardson at ECOC 2002, in Copenhagen, Denmark, September 8-12, 2002.

Other vendors who are interested in participating in the MSA shall contact Haruo Yonetani of Fujitsu Quantum Devices at +81-55-275-4411 or Kaz Tanida of Sumitomo Electric at +81-45-853-7154.
