MedityTM Semiconductor Solution for 3G Mobile Phones

What's Medity

Customers in the mobile phone market demand products that are smaller and less expensive, with longer battery lives and the ability to run every type of application.
To meet the challenge of delivering all of these features, mobile phone manufacturers need to 1) reduce the development effort expended on components and concentrate their resources on features that differentiate the product. 2) cut their bill-of-material costs by reducing the total number of components, and 3) miniaturize the handset.
Medity represents a comprehensive solution that can help manufacturers clear these and other hundles. It is a well-integrated platform consisting of the following 5 components.

Medity's 5 key components are as follows:

  1. Semiconductor chipset
The main components of the chipset are the DBB*1/application integrated chip, RF ICs, and power ICs.

  2. Software
Medity includes a communication software package and an application package.
    • Application software package includes Linux and other operating systems, drivers, middleware, and other application software, provided by NEC Electronics within the platformOViA framework.
  3. Evaluation Kit
The EVK (evaluation kit) contains all of the material needed to develop mobile phone handsets, including an evaluation board for software development, reference design circuit and board diagrams, and documents.

  4. Software development tools
Development tools for communication software and application software enable system designers to develop and test their own system.

  5. System Integration services
Through the platformOViA partner program, NEC Electronics provide services such as porting operating system to the customer's system, developing drivers, and porting middleware packages.

Medity Roadmap

Since 1997 NEC group has led the way in development of the W-CDMA technology and shipped its first digital baseband(DBB) ICs for W-CDMA in 2000.
NEC Electronics integrated DBB core and application processor and started releasing Medity, the semiconductor solution developed based on the integrated LSI.
NEC Electronics regards Medity as the centerpiece of its mobile phone semiconductor business and intends to become the leading provider of advanced semiconductors for 3G mobile phones.
