CSR Report Published

NEC Electronics recently published its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Report. This report contains information formerly included in the company's Environmental Management Report (issued up until last year), as well as information on customer satisfaction (CS) promotion, compliance and more. In June 2004, our company established Guiding Principles as part of group-wide CSR-related management guidelines designed to earn the complete trust of each and every one of the company's stakeholders. The CSR Report provides customers, shareholders, investors, trading partners, employees, citizens of local communities and all other stakeholders with easy-to-understand explanations of NEC Electronics' CSR activities.

Concepts for customer satisfaction management

What follows is a sampling of the activities highlighted in the CSR Report.

Our company strongly believes that the key to corporate longevity is rooted in providing customers with optimal solutions and total satisfaction. We therefore strive to develop products, provide services and undertake business activities that reflect the diverse needs of our customers (Figure 1). To this end, we periodically ask our customers and sales partners to participate in satisfaction surveys, and then use the results of these surveys to further improve our products, services and business activities. In addition, we have established a "Semiconductor Hotline" through which customers can inquire about our products and services and receive fast and accurate technical information.

Environmental management system

NEC Electronics also recognizes that our semiconductor-related business activities impose a considerable burden on the environment, and we believe that there is a direct connection between our longevity as a company and the proactive efforts we have taken toward conserving the global environment. We are therefore exerting our utmost efforts to provide environmentally conscious products in response to calls for the elimination of lead and improved energy conservation. We are also making every effort to reduce the damage inflicted by our factories on the environment through self-imposed limitations on global greenhouse gas emissions (Figure 2). In fiscal year 2003, the environmental management systems at all of our production plants around the globe successfully acquired certification to the ISO 14001 standard and have since then worked toward the creation of a solid foundation for environmental management.

Our company is also actively implementing programs that contribute to environmental conservation and assist our local communities.
For example, in August 2004, employee volunteers from NEC Electronics America filled 300 backpacks with school supplies as part of a "Back-to-School Backpack Drive" for underprivileged children in Silicon Valley.

NEC Electronics will continue to work toward earning the trust of its stakeholders through these and other sound business activities.

Semiconductors and the Enrichment of our Lives <Semiconductor products used in mobile phones>

Semiconductor products used in mobile phones

Semiconductors play an important role in mobile phones, which have now become an essential part of our everyday lives. Semiconductor products are not only vital to the size and weight of mobile phones, but also to functions such as calling, text messaging, Internet access, digital photography, video calling and video transmission. In particular, semiconductors greatly contribute to the longevity of mobile phone batteries thanks to their low power consumption. NEC Electronics will continue to play a role in the evolution of mobile phones.
