At the 11th annual LSI of the Year awards ceremony (jointly sponsored by Semiconductor Industry News and Reed Exhibitions Japan, Ltd.) on July 7, 2004, NEC Electronics was awarded the Excellence Award in the Device Category for its DVD recorder-use audio video processing LSI (µPD61181).
In addition to this year's award, NEC Electronics received the Grand Prize for its "System LSI C-Based Design Environment" and the Excellence Award for its "New ASIC Solution Platform ISSP" in 2003, thus bringing the company's grand total of "LSI of the Year" awards to four.
Established in 1994 to further promote market development and technology in the semiconductor industry, "LSI of the Year" awards acknowledge the most remarkable LSI products and technologies and the best design environment/development tools from the previous year in the Device and Design Environment/Development Tool categories, respectively. This year, approximately 1,200 entries underwent stringent examination for the Device Category, and three awards were presented for each respective category: the Grand Prize, the Second Grand Prize and an Excellence Award.
General Manager [First Name] Hirasawa of the Digital AV Systems Division attended this year's award's ceremony as NEC Electronics' representative and accepted the certificate and commemorative trophy from the sponsors (Photo 1).
This year's winner, a DVD recorder-use audio video processing LSI (µPD61181) (Photo 2), is truly epoch-making in that it is possible to execute back-end processing functions such as compression and decompression of moving image and sound data and still and moving image output by simply using this system LSI in combination with a memory chip. Traditionally a total of eight chips were necessary to conduct all of these functions. Moreover, circuit board size can be reduced thanks to a fewer number of parts, thereby making it possible to easily construct DVD recorders in a short period of time and at a lower cost. This was said to be the deciding factor in this product being given the "LSI of the Year" Excellence Award.
General Manager [First Name] Hirasawa of the Digital AV Systems Division expressed his congratulations
"When development of this product first began, a high degree of integration-the highest in the industry-was necessary to consolidate all of these functions onto a single chip rather than the conventional eight chips. To combine each of the respective functions, moving image and sound compression, output and processing, hardware and software design was carried out in collaboration with our customers and other divisions within NEC Electronics. For this reason, the product was completed within a remarkably short development period, and our customers were extremely satisfied with the final product, as were we. I am truly pleased that we won this year's "LSI of the Year" Excellence Award. We will continue to carry on our development efforts with an aim to integrate our products with other digital AV devices."
NEC Electronics will continue to strive to develop products and technologies that will lead the way in this multimedia era.
