Both ROM cartridges and embedded memory devices can easily be read and duplicated—and that includes the stored bit streams used for programming FPGAs. Gate arrays can prevent this piracy by acting as security keys. The stored software works only if the gate array is present, and the gate array itself is difficult to reverse-engineer. Several game manufacturers have used this security-key strategy by including the gate array "key" in ROM cartridges or embedded in a system board.
