Idea 4: Replace end-of-life components

When you have a successful and competitive product, your design stays around for a long time. But how do you deal with components that are reaching end of life (EOL)? Gate arrays provide a solution to EOL components with proven staying power. Some U.S. customers have designed with NEC Electronics ASICs for nearly 20 years.

Additionally, in cases such as the 8251 UART and 8254 programmable timer unit, NEC Electronics has provided pin-compatible replacements based on gate arrays. Solutions such as these eliminate the need to respin an existing system board and add many years to the product's life.

When replacing EOL components, operating voltages can be an issue. In such cases, NEC Electronics CMOS-N5 gate arrays offer a key advantage: 5V-only operation for both core logic and I/Os.
