Embedded Technology 2006
*Embedded Technology had ended as of November 17th, 2006
At Embedded Technology 2006, NEC Electronics demonstrated the technical savoir faire in automobile solutions, flash microcontroller and mobile solutions. One of the must-sees includes the demonstration of IMAPCAR chip which is featured in the pre-crash safety system of the new Lexus LS460. For more detail, please read the briefing of the exhibition below!
Automobile Solutions
IMAPCAR – The Key Technology in Pre-crash Safety System

The image processor for automobiles detects nearby objects such as vehicles, pedestrians, and lane markers in real-time, enabling automobile manufacturers to easily implement safety mechanisms and collision prevention systems.
In the demo booth, an IMAPCAR-equipped RC car is moving along the racing course and steering clear of the wall and obstacles. Meanwhile, a TV is showing the crash-course analysis, processed by IMAPCAR chip, which is transferred from the camera mounted on the RC car. All of these are done without a pilot!
For more information about IMAPCAR, please see the August 25th/2006 press release
LAN FlexRay: The Next-Generation Standard for the High-speed, High-reliability In-Vehicle Networking

 Real-time control through FlexRay
|
|
Originally used in the aircrafts, FlexRay is a next-generation automotive network communications protocol that offers high-speed and high-reliability for in-vehicle communications.
In the demo booth, a dashboard is displayed where the maneuver information of steering, accelerator and brake operated by visitors is propagated to each ECU in real time through FlexRay. FlexRay demonstrates its reliability through its redundancy-design, where one LAN's failure will not affect the network.
CAN-LIN: Solution for the Development Environment

Demo car with various electronical controls
|
|
NEC Electronics collaborates with various partners to offer development tools and starter kits for automobile solution.
In the demo booth, a model car is displayed and visitor can "test drive" various controls of a vehicle from electric mirror to dashboard operations.

78K0 All Flash: The lineup expansion of 8-bit MCU minuscule size package

 Backlight's brightness is automatically adjusted
|
|
The well-received flash microcontroller has become easier-than-ever to embed with your design project!
This amazing tiny 8-bit MCU integrates peripheral devices, such as timer and oscillator, and offers it in one single-chip package which allows a more flexible "design-ability" and better performance.
In the demo booth, a LCD that automatically adjusts the backlight according to the surrounding brightness is displayed. The demo set, consisting of a 78K0 All Flash MCU and a light sensor module, is so small that it can be embedded practically into any devices with ease.
The potential adoptions of 78K0 All Flash MCU include mobile devices, such as cellular phone, PDA, and etc, where energy-saving of LCD panel is a must.

ZigBee Software Development Kit

Relay of data in case of a device's failure
|
|
ZigBee is a specification for a suite of high level communication protocols that could be adapt in markets from home to industrial uses. Some of the ZigBee features include relay function, energy efficiency, and etc.
In the demo booth, a simulation of 6-floors hotel housing 4 rooms on each floor is displayed. Each floor's room temperature is centrally monitored by placing ZigBee-enabled devices in each room and rooftop, where the "server" resides. ZigBee's ability to recalculate the network path in case of one device's failure meaning that a breakdown in 3rd floor's device will have no effect of whatsoever on the whole temperature-monitoring network!
With the ZigBee Kit from NEC Electronics, you can incorporate it into your design with ease thanks to the kit's degree of completeness.

Motor Solutions: From Home Appliances to Industrial Applications

MCU from NEC Electronics has been well-recognized for its excellent performance and adaptability since decades ago, especially in the motor applications for FA (factory automation) machines and home appliances.
In the demo booth, a plotter drawing the 3-D characters with great precision is displayed. The motor is constructed by the evaluation board kit available from NEC Electronics.

Mobile Solutions
platformOViA & PacketVideo: Terrestrial Digital Broadcasting Solution
In the demo booth, terrestrial digital TV is being broadcasted where MP201 is embedded as CPU and ran by the middleware created by PacketVideo. The video format is fully compatible around the globe (the demo set is connected to DVB-H modulator, the European standard for terrestrial digital broadcasting)
Media Player Solution: Multimedia Interface OViA Media Framework

 Media player demo
|
|
Multimedia data processing, enabled by OViA Media Framework (OMF), is perhaps the most notable capability of platformOViA.
IN the demo booth, a video is being played in the media player, where OMF's API commands are executed on MP201 and platformOViA environment.
