NEC Corporation 2nd LSI Memory Division Receives Coveted Supplier Continuous Quality Improvement Award from Intel NEC Also Receives Preferred Quality Supplier Award

Intel Corporation announced today that it has recognized NEC Corporation's (NEC) (NASDAQ: NIPNY) 2nd LSI Memory Division with both the 1998 Supplier Continuous Quality Improvement Award (SCQI) as well as its Preferred Quality Supplier (PQS) award. NEC supplies Pipeline Burst Static RAM (PBSRAM) products to Intel.

"NEC's 2nd LSI Memory Division has done a flawless job over the last year and has had a history of being an outstanding supplier to Intel. NEC has exemplified what the SCQI Award stands for," said Mike Splinter, senior vice president and general manager of the Intel Technology and Manufacturing Group.

In regards to the PQS Award, "NEC's 2nd LSI Memory Division has been a very reliable supplier of high quality PBSRAMs to Intel," said Jim. M. Lee, director of IC Memory Procurement at Intel. "Their quality and execution have been exemplary. We are very pleased to recognize their support and excellence with both the PQS and the SCQI Awards."

To qualify for SCQI status, suppliers must attain a 95 percent or better on a four-quarter report card, attain 90 performance against an aligned annual improvement plan and finally, attain an overall score of 63 percent or more on the Standardized Supplier Quality Assessment (SSQA). SSQA is based on ISO 9000, Malcolm Baldrige and industry software quality criteria.

To qualify for PQS status, suppliers must attain 80 percent or better on a four-quarter report card, attain 80 percent performance against an aligned annual improvement plan, and finally, attain an overall score of 55 percent or more on the Standardized Supplier Quality Assessment (SSQA). SSQA is based on ISO 9000, Malcolm Baldrige and industry software quality criteria.

The SCQI and PQS awards are part of Intel's Supplier Continuous Quality Improvement (SCQI) process. The intention of this process is to encourage Intel's key suppliers to strive for excellence and continuous improvement in their operations. Key suppliers are those that supply a product or service deemed essential to Intel's success.

"NEC is honored to be a recipient of an Intel SCQI award for 1998. Providing quality products with excellent service is our highest priority, and we are encouraged by this recognition of our efforts. NEC is dedicated to strengthening our relationship with Intel and continuing to meet our customers' needs as we move into the 21st century," said Keiichi Shimakura, associate senior vice president at NEC.

Intel recognizes PQS and SCQI winners with a full-page advertisement in the Wall Street Journal and an awards ceremony. Wall Street Journal ads will run in American editions on April 6 and in Asian editions April 8.

Note to Editors:

*1: Static random access memory (SRAM) is a volatile read/write memory device that, in contrast with Dynamic RAM (DRAM), does not need to be refreshed. In general, SRAM chips are faster and simpler to interface than DRAMs. Used with a pipeline burst technique, the number of clock cycles needed to read or write to memory can be reduced by executing an operation before the previous one has been completed.
