NEC Launches High-Resolution, Thin, Lightweight 14.1-inch TFT LCD Module for Notebook PCs
14.1-inch TFT(NL10276BC28-11)
NEC Corporation (NEC) is to begin sampling in April 1998 of a new high-resolution, thin, lightweight 14.1-inch TFTi LCDii (NL10276BC28-11) module for high performance A4 file-size notebook personal computers.
The new 14.1-inch module expands NEC's range of thin, lightweight TFT LCD modules, joining a 13.3-inch (NL10276BC28-03) and two 12.1-inch (NL8060BC31-11 and NL8060BC31-13) high resolution modules announced in December 1997.
The new 14.1-inch TFT LCD module offers a variety of features, including:
- Screen real-estate equal to a 16-inch CRT desktop monitor;
- Large capacity 1,024x768 pixel resolution screen;
- 262,144 colors ;
- Portability, ranking the unit at the top of the industry: with a thickness of only 6.4mm typ. and weight of just 570g typ., the unit is 1.4mm thinner and 130g lighter than the 13.3-inch NL10276BC28-03;
- An active screen area utilizing 91% of the module's total footprint (a 2% increase in the active screen area compared to the NL10276BC28-03);
- A brightness of 90cd/m2 and a low power consumption of only 3.9 watts; and,
- Sidemount type enabling extremely thin notebook PC designs.
These features give the module great portability and performance putting it in the top level of LCD modules available. Sample prices are set at 190,000 Yen and volume production is expected to begin in May, 1998 at a rate of 20,000 units per month.
Background
With the increasing variety of notebook personal computers, more and more manufacturers are producing high-end machines utilizing LCD modules offering the largest screen size and the highest resolution. In addition to offering this desired features, the latest NEC offering provides an extremely slim, lightweight module with a larger active screen area in the module's footprint and lower power consumption, taking performance benefits to a new level.
Through the higher integration of the module's driver circuits and backlight and other peripheral functions, NEC achieved its slim profile, and larger active area within the module's footprint. While achieving this, NEC also raised the quality of the module's color reproduction and luminescence with use of a new color filter and improved performance of the backlight that also reduced power consumption.
