NEC and Asia Asia has played a critical role in the development of the company's overseas business for over 40 years. In the mid-1950s, NEC started its exports of telecommunications equipment to Asian countries including India, the Philippines and Taiwan. Today, NEC's approach to globalization means that to service local customers NEC must have a local presence in that market. This prompted the company to undertake a massive investment program that now sees the company manufacture a broad range of its communication equipment in the region. This includes: digital public switching systems, microwave transmission systems, fiber optic transmission systems, PBX, mobile telephones, pagers, fax machines and such cutting-edge technologies as set-top-boxes. NEC now has a total of 27 production and 16 sales companies, including 8 representative offices in the Asia region. In terms of value, 1996 Asian production accounted for nearly 50% or $3.2 billion of NEC's total overseas output of $6.3 billion in 43 production facilities. The company expects some 20% annual growth for the region up until the year 2000. For Outline of Profile of NEC Corporation, please see the attached sheet. *** |
