NEC Launches 78K0S Microcontroller for Preset Remote Controllers

TOKYO January 7th, 2002 - NEC Corporation (NEC) (NASDAQ: NIPNY) (FTSE: 6701q.l) (TSE: 6701) today announced the release of an 8-bit single-chip microcontroller with an on-chip carrier generator (product name: µPD789088 Sub-series) designed for remote control applications. Sample shipments of the flash memory model are scheduled to start in January 2002 at a unit price of 1000 yen.

The main features of this new compact and general-purpose product in the 78K0/78K0S Series of 8-bit single-chip microcontrollers include:
  1. Low-voltage, high-speed operation
The µPD789088 enables extremely fast processing, with a minimum instruction execution time of less than half of NEC's conventional products when operating on a supply voltage of 2.0 V - just 0.8 µs.

  2. On-chip carrier generator
A variety of remote control formats can be created due to the incorporation of a dedicated carrier generator for generating transmission signals required for remote control operation. In addition, with the largest capacity memory in its class of 16/32 KB, the µPD789088 is ideal for preset remote controllers.

  3. Low power consumption
Reduction of the power current to as low as 1.5 µA (TYP) in standby mode has considerably lengthened the life of the battery in a remote control set.

  4. Key return signal detector
Eight key return ports with pull-up resistors for input and fifteen for output use, enable not just TV and VCR remote control, but also remote control in a variety of sets with up to 120 keys.

  5. On-chip low-voltage detector
The µPD789088 includes an internal reset generator to prevent the occurrence of hang-up when the battery of the remote controller is changed. Data can also be easily backed up thanks to the incorporation of a flag to judge whether internal RAM data is being retained (LVI flag).

  6. Compact package
The µPD789088 employs an SSOP - the smallest class of package - and is suitable for compact-size application sets including portable devices.

Background
A preset remote controller is a remote controller with memory that contains preset remote control data supported by a number of makers, enabling manipulation of the set simply by changing the setting to the maker of the user's set. There are currently a huge number of remote controller sets in the world, and an equally large number of remote control signal transmission formats. Set types also vary greatly, from TV and VCR to DVD and audio, and therefore, ROM with capacity to incorporate the remote control data of each maker is required. Adding to complexity, some remote control transmission formats do not simply output predetermined data: they also output data operation results. To support these diverse formats and memory requirements, NEC has developed the 78K0S Microcontroller sub-series, with the essential high-speed processing capability and large memory capacity.

The release of NEC's new microcontroller, targeted at a range of battery-driven small household and other electrical appliances, principally preset remote controllers, promises to give the company an even greater share the remote control market. NEC is dedicated to meeting all of its customers' needs by continuing to enhance its lineup of compact general-purpose microcontrollers.
