Press Release *****For immediate use July 11th, 2000 NEC to Maintain 128Mb Rambus DRAM Production PlansTOKYO July 11th, 2000 - NEC Corporation (NEC) (NASDAQ: NIPNY) (FTSE: 6701q.l) is maintaining its production plans for 128 megabit (Mb) Direct Rambus dynamic random access memory (DRAM) devices, contrary to a story published in a Japanese newspaper today. NEC's Rambus DRAM plans for production of 1 million 128Mb density Direct Rambus DRAM devices per month are unchanged, while it has also launched production of the industry's first validated 288Mb Direct Rambus DRAM devices from June in a 0.18-micron process for production of 150,000 units per month by September. Production of the 288Mb RDRAM devices will be expanded to 750,000 units per month by December 2000 and then to 1.25 million units per month by March 2001. The late emergence of the personal computer market for these memory
devices, however, and the strong demand for high density, ECC (error correction
code) RDRAMs from vendors of high-end PC workstations and servers, has
meant NEC is shifting production to meet these changing market needs.
