High-End Computing
SERVERS AND WORKSTATIONS

Requiring both high performance and low cost
Servers and Workstations

The use of high-end servers has expanded rapidly because it is now commonplace for computers to connect to networks such as the Internet and LANs. However, workstations can now perform complicated processing tasks such as image processing and machine design with ease. The performance and reliability of high-end servers should far exceed that of cheaper workstation PCs. There is now a demand for both high performance and low cost.
In order to deal with an ever-increasing volume of data and process complicated operations more speedily, even higher performance is demanded, but at the same time, because smaller organizations such as branch offices and office departments are also using these servers, affordable, accessible products are demanded.

The emergence of processors developed for high performance PCs and high performance IA (Intel architecture) machines in combination with widely used OSs such as Windows and Linux has led to consistent price reductions.

In terms of achieving even higher performance, the major challenge now is a transition to 64-bit architecture. Conventionally, in the world of servers it has been the custom to run IA-32 (32-bit) machines in parallel. However, in the case of servers running applications such as databases, thus requiring large volumes of memory, the largest memory installed in a 32-bit machine is currently 4GB, and this limitation is standing in the way of improving performance further. Thus, there is an increasing demand for 64-bit machines. Also, the appearance of up-to-date technologies such as serial ATA and PCI Express is helping us to maintain excellent cost performance as these technologies become available.

Maintaining a leading position in computer production and support

NEC Electronics is responding to these two contradictory demands by utilizing its advanced proprietary system LSI technology. System LSI provides high-speed operation and excellent reliability, catering to the need for high performance, and also reduces development costs and delivery times, catering to the need for low prices. As a result, our system LSI products support processors, chip sets and graphic chips, as well as cutting-edge technology such as chip sets for QDR (Quad Data Rate) SRAM and PCI Express and serial ATA. NEC Electronics therefore plays an active role in various areas of high-end computing. With our cutting edge production expertise, such as the "ISSP" Series used for faster, effective designs; the "CB" Series, which allows ultra-high-speed operation; and our support tools, which provide a design environment and function block information, at NEC Electronics we are committed to using our full potential to supply client-focused products.
