In recent years flat panel TVs have become increasingly popular, being thinner and lighter than conventional cathode ray tube (CRT) televisions. Flat panel TV sales are therefore expected to be a high-growth item in the home appliance market. There are two types of flat panel TV: compact liquid crystal TVs that offer low power consumption and have comparatively small screens, and plasma TVs which can easily be made into larger screens. NEC Electronics is providing key devices for both these types of flat panel TV. Volumes supplied are growing steadily, thanks to increasing demand due to the transition to digital terrestrial broadcasting.
