Basic Configuration Example
Q1
How is the series regulator used?
A1
The series regulator is connected in series with the load.
It detects fluctuation of the output current and input voltage by using an operational amplifier and holds the output voltage constant by controlling a variable resistor connected in series with the load.

Q2
How is the shunt regulator used?
A2
The shunt regulator is connected in parallel with the load, which has the result of shunting the current.
It detects fluctuation of the output current and input voltage by using an operational amplifier and holds the output voltage constant by controlling a variable resistor connected in parallel with the load.

Q3
How is an AC-DC converter organized with a switching regulator?
A3
Switching of a power MOS FET is controlled and the voltage of the pulse generated as a result is transformed by a transformer, and a stable voltage is obtained by using a smoothing circuit.

Q4
How is a DC-DC converter organized with a switching regulator?
A4
DC-DC converters may come in a chopper type and a charge pump type.

  • Chopper type

  • A DC-DC converter of this type controls the input voltage by switching and produces a stable voltage by using a smoothing circuit.

  • Charge pump type

  • A converter of this type controls the input voltage by switching, and produces a stable voltage by using a smoothing circuit while charging and discharging a capacitor.
This type does not feed back.
