8-bit microcontrollers and their relentless support of our everyday lives (2/2)

NEC Electronics' 8-bit microcontroller-Making low power consumption a reality

Lineup of microcontrollers for meters

NEC Electronics offers a lineup of 8-bit microcontrollers suitable for battery-driven applications requiring lower power consumption (Figure 2). For example, power consumption for the µPD789881 at an operating frequency of 500 kHz at 3 volts is 21 µA, thereby making operation at an extremely low level of power consumption a reality. Moreover, the µPD780958 is equipped with many functions suitable for reducing power consumption or building in a flux detection timer in microcontroller meters.

NEC Electronics' 8-bit microcontrollers are playing an increasingly active role in a number of fields due to the expansion of product lines incorporating peripheral functions such as LCD controllers and drivers, which are indispensable for the reduction of power consumption and meter displays. In addition to their use in gas, water and electricity meters, 8-bit microcontrollers are gaining widespread attention for their utilization in heat consumption meters, which are used to adjust temperature and water volume for hot-water heaters. In Europe in particular, heat consumption meters are in high demand, thus making it a huge market. NEC Electronics has its sights set on achieving the top share in all meter markets and plans to continue developing 8-bit microcontrollers suitable for use in microcontroller meters.

Though they often go unnoticed, 8-bit microcontrollers work relentlessly around the clock for periods as long as ten years to watch over and protect us as we go about our everyday lives. NEC Electronics promises to continue to offer 8-bit microcontrollers that support and bring affluence to your life.
