Commercialization of LCD controller/driver IC with on-chip automatic backlight brightness adjustment function

Power consumption of LCD modules reduced by up to 50%

Mobile phones have become an essential tool in everyday life. The more functions, such as cameras, games, Web browsing, and one-segment TV broadcasting are integrated, the more beautiful displays are required to be.
NEC Electronics has developed a backlight control technology (Mobile AGCPS™) that realizes low-power consumption and high image quality simultaneously.

Development background

Mobile phones that can receive one-segment TV broadcasting need to support long viewing time. While you are watching one-segment TV, the display is on continuously, so that the LCD module draws down the battery of the mobile phone, which shortens the continuous viewing time. Therefore, low-power consumption LCD modules are in strong demand. The backlight accounts for most of the power consumption of the LCD module.
If only the power consumption of the backlight is dramatically reduced while maintaining high image quality...

In response to these market demands, NEC Electronics has developed and commercialized a new backlight control technology.

NEC Electronics backlight control technology
(Mobile AGCPS: Auto Gamma Control and Power Saving)

The backlight control technology (Mobile AGCPS) developed by NEC Electronics automatically recognizes image data and adjusts the backlight brightness accordingly.
For example, when dark images are displayed, the backlight brightness is lowered, which saves power; whereas conventional systems keep the brightness constant.

Point to be noted! Simply decreasing the backlight brightness would result in dim images.
The original technology (Mobile AGCPS) of NEC Electronics finely corrects image data according to the backlight brightness, thereby achieving low-power consumption without image quality degradation.

The backlight control technology (Mobile AGCPS) of NEC Electronics maintains beautiful image quality while reducing power consumption by up to 50% compared to conventional modules.
