EMMA*1, the nickname for system LSI product group from NEC Electronics, is specifically designed for digital AV applications, such as STB (Set-Top-Boxes), digital TV, and DVD recorder, to deliver versatile and uncompromised performance through MPEG signal process core technology. From high-end requirements, such as digital HD*2 signal process or parallel processing of multiple streaming signals, to low-end requirements, such as one-chip processor for SD*3 -compatible devices, EMMA enables and empowers your digital AV application.
"EMMA"*4 has its name originated from the code name of a device which was developed for MPEG signal processing used in European STB. Started out with a simple MPEG decode function, EMMA has been further enhanced with features such as simultaneous multiple signal processing and HD playback. And, with the digitalization of CATV and satellite TV, EMMA2SL/S supports advanced features such as direct input in MPEG2-TS format and integrated QPSK demodulator for digital data communication are added to high-end STB without adding the cost*5.

With recent rapid expansion of DVD recorder market in Japan, MPEG decode and encode functions have been integrated as a core technology to address the needs of analog broadcast recording. The MPEG decode part of "EMMA" employs the same technology as the one uses in STB; while the MPEG encode part of "EMMA" employs the MPEG2 encoding technology for SD-quality video playback.
Recent market saturation of DVD recorder has pushed the makers to lower the unit price; thus the need for one-chip integration of peripheral devices in order to reduce the costs. "SCOMBO3" integrates numerous DVD drive controls, such as DV codec used in digital recording for digital camcorder, and enables a smaller DVD recorder design at a relatively lower price.
However, HD-enabled and other functions' enhancements have been the focus of R&D in addition to size miniaturization. Awarded as [Best Electronics Component] in the 3rd Annual Manufacturing Components Japan, "EMMA2RH" offers simultaneous decoding of streams (up to 2) in HD video playback as a basic feature. Since allotted processing of SD-quality up to 2 streams could be realized, "EMMA2RH" is capable of handling both Digital HD and the existing analog broadcasting.
With one-chip integration of peripheral devices, "EMMA2RH" saves both the real estate and the costs for manufacturers and indisputably took "Best Electrics Component" title during the 3rd Annual manufacturing Components Japan.
